THE Hastings Bengali Forum celebrated the Bengali New Year last Thursday (May 29) at the White Rock Theatre, Sussex Rooms.

Some 400 people from Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill and Eastbourne attended the event which included food, cultural activities and speeches.

The former chairman, Abdul Mukith, said: “It was good and very enjoyable. It was a chance for friends and family to see each other.”

In West Bengal and Bangladesh the Bengali New Year is known as Pohela Boishakh and traditionally occurs on April 14/15. But Boishakhi Mela, as it is known in England, has been celebrated by the English Bangladeshi community since 1997 and is held in the second week of May.
