Alexandra Park celebrates 150 years

ALEXANDRA Park will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in style with a Victorian themed family event on Saturday, June 14.

Visitors are invited to dress up in Victorian clothes and fun activities will include hammer throwing, children’s play day, a steam boat and model boat display on the boating lake, afternoon tea, Punch and Judy, a brass band and penny farthing cycles.

Cllr Dawn Poole, lead member for leisure and amenities, said: “This free event for all at the park aims to celebrate the park and its history in true Victorian style and will mirror some of the original events that took place in 1864.”

Hastings Corporation, which owned the lease to the land, passed a resolution allowing the public access to the lower end of the park for recreation and it opened as St Andrews Gardens in 1864 - the park officially opened in 1882.

Organised by Hastings Borough Council together with local community groups, events are from noon until 5pm on Saturday, June 14 in the lower park.
