A long-time derelict site next to the main railway line could be transformed into a £10 million state-of-the-art student village.
The University of Brighton has submitted plans to build a seven-storey residential block for more than 200 students.
The bid is another major boost for the rapidly changing town centre which has undergone huge investment over the last decade.
Council leader Jeremy Birch said: “This is a huge investment for the town.
“Building major student halls will help boost the town centre economy and attract even more people to live and study here. Hastings is now shaping up into a university town in its own right and we very much welcome these plans which are helping create much-needed regeneration.”
