A Local Scout group has raised over £500 to support St John Ambulance’s Hastings Homeless Service.
The 1st Little Common Scouts chose the service as their charity of the year for 2015, and recently presented a cheque for £554 to its Nurse Coordinator Roger Nuttall.
To raise the money, the Scouts completed a 10 mile hike in March, raising over £250. In early September, they took part in an overnight sleep-out using cardboard boxes as beds, to experience for themselves some of the challenges homeless people face living on the streets.
Roger Nuttall, Nurse Coordinator, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the Scouts’ support.
“It’s good to see young people gain some understanding of what the more vulnerable members of our community go through when faced with homelessness.”
St John Ambulance’s Hastings Homeless Service provides nurse-led health care, podiatry and first aid to homeless and vulnerably housed people through its drop-in clinics.
It also supports homeless patients in the Conquest Hospital by spending time visiting them and liaising with hospital staff and housing agencies. This is to ensure a safe and effectively planned discharge with all necessary support and follow-up healthcare in place.
Each year St John teaches 800,000 people to save a life. For more information on St John Ambulance, including how to make a donation and volunteering opportunities visit www.sja.org.uk or call 0303 003 0101.
