A YOUNG chef is dicing with success having made it to the final stages of a cookery competition.

Billy Bowes, a Year 11 student at William Parker Sports College is celebrating reaching the regional finals of the FutureChef competition, which aims to inspire young people to explore food and cooking as a life skill.

Billy, 15, won his college heat and then went on to win the East Sussex stage at Sussex Coast College last Friday (January 11).

He impressed the judges by cooking pan fried haddock with a caper, tomato and butter bean sauce, served on a bed of spinach, followed by a syrup and raisin sponge.

He said: “I’m really happy I got through to the next round and, although I’m nervous, I hope I do just as well.”

Billy will go on to compete at the South East FutureChef Regional Final which will be held in Hampshire in February.

He will be mentored by Andrew Wilson, executive chef at the Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club, who will help with menu planning, budgeting, food preparation, cooking and presentation through to the next round of the programme.

Jenny O’Connor, learning leader for design technology at William Parker, said: “Billy has done exceptionally well to get through to the regional finals.

“I hope he enjoys the experience at Ashdown Park Hotel and I would like to wish him all the best in the next round.”
