Women’s Day events all over town

A CROWD of women braved the rain to take part in a march in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The march which started at Warrior Square, St Leonards, was part of a series of events organised to mark the occasion last Friday (March 8) by Hastings Women’s Voice.

It preceded a day of music, speakers and relaxation at the White Rock Hotel, featuring a performance from jazz legend Liane Carroll.

The St Leonards Academy marked International Women’s Day with a talk from Sophie Butel, a teacher at the academy who has just returned from Sierra Leone, where she worked with students and teachers from Huntingdon School, the academy’s link school.

She highlighted the fact that girls in Sierra Leone in Africa for a long time did not have the same rights to education as boys.

The event was attended by Hastings MP Amber Rudd who said: “ It was a pleasure to meet these young women from The St Leonards Academy who seemed so interested in the significance of International Women’s Day, particularly in how their lives as women were so different to women in Sierra Leone.”

On Saturday (March 9) there was an ‘Inspiring Women’ discussion event at the University of Brighton in Hastings’ Havelock Road campus, planned in partnership with Hastings Women’s Voice.

Topics included women in education, business and politics.

On the Friday, (March 8), was Hastings Slut Cycle, presented by riart Grrrls and From Pier to Eternity.

The cycle ride saw participants bring wheels and heels along in order to mark International Women’s Day by saying no to sexual intimidation in Hastings.
