William Parker is top of county class in GCSE tables

WILLIAM Parker Sports College is the most improved school in the county in terms of GCSE results according to figures released by the Department for Education.

Last year, 53 per cent of candidates gained five A* to C grade passes, including English and maths.

This was a 14 per cent increase from 2010, when the proportion of candidates gaining five A* to C grades was 39 per cent.

Headteacher John Court said that the key to the school’s success was the partnership between the teachers, parents, and students.

He added: “We are the most improved school in East Sussex this year, and we are likely to be in the 200 most improved schools in the country.

“The past few years has been onwards and upwards. Obviously, there is still more to do.

“We want to do the best we can for each student, individually, and collectively.”

Hillcrest School, which has closed and now is the home of The Hastings Academy, and Filsham Valley School, also shut with The St Leonards Academy’s Edinburgh Road campus on that site, saw slight improvements in their results too.

The Grove, now The St Leonards Academy’s Darwell Road campus, saw a five per cent decrease in the number of candidates gaining five A* to C grades at GCSE, 38 down from 43 per cent.

At Helenswood School, the proportion of students gaining five A* to C passes at GCSE in 2011 decreased from 60 per cent to 48 per cent, the largest drop in the county for state-funded schools.

Headteacher Lucy Monk said: “Although we are disappointed that our overall pass rate including English and maths has slipped from last year, I am absolutely thrilled that an amazing 31 per cent of our students achieved the very highest GCSE grades.

“These results are set to ensure that a record number of students from Hastings and St Leonards remain in education post-16.”
