Trust consultation calls for ideas on future of the pier

HUNDREDS of people are expected to attend a public consultation on the future of Hastings Pier next month.

Members of the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust recently celebrated the news that their ambitious plans to restore the Victorian attraction to its former glories have received the thumbs up from the Lottery.

That green tick has arrived in the shape of an initial £350,000 plus grant - with another £8million expected to follow.

The trust has already teamed up with an architect and is set to start working on a detailed plan to put to the Lottery.

But before then it wants to hear from local people about exactly what sort of pier people want.

For that reason, members of the trust will be at St Mary-in-the-Castle from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, June 4, along with staff from the design team at dRMM, the architects chosen earlier this year following a string of interviews.

A host of local businesses and community groups have been invited to the morning session, which will include an update on the progress of Hastings Borough Council’s efforts to compulsory purchase the pier from current owners Ravenclaw.

And following a series of talks, people will be asked to split into groups to discuss the findings of a recent community consultation and expand on any ideas on what the design should reflect.

Then, from 1pm, members of the public are invited to pop in for a three-hour drop-in session.

There they can learn more about the project, find out the results of the consultation and comment on early plans.

Members of the trust will be on hand throughout the day to discuss the pier or, for more information visit www.hpwrt.co.uk.
