THREE events to raise awareness of community growing projects will take place as part of the Big Dig, a UK-wide initiative.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the Moveable Feast Community Garden, in Western Road, St Leonards, Bohemia Walled Garden, in Summerfield Woods, St Leonards, and The Bridge Gardening Project, in Priory Road, will be opening their gates to fledgling green-fingered enthusiasts as part of the largest ever Big Dig community garden growing day.

An initiative to engage thousands of people in volunteer-run food-growing projects, the Big Dig will be taking place in towns and cities across the country.

The overall aim is to involve local people, in creating vibrant community food gardens, which can reduce anti-social behaviour, provide fresh, healthy food and put pride into communities.

Abby Nicol, grower at the Moveable Feast Community Garden, said: “It’s a great opportunity to be part of an event that raises awareness about the community growing projects we have here in St Leonards and Hastings.

“All of the gardens share an interest in encouraging local food production and consumption.

“It’s becoming more and more important for people to have the opportunity to connect with where their food comes from and discover how fun it is to grow fruit and vegetables too.

“It’s great for us to be part of a shared event and work together towards creating more edible urban landscapes in our towns.”

There will be willow sculpting and gardening at the Bohemia Walled Garden, opportunities to learn about edible gardening and swapping seeds at The Bridge Centre in Ore.

Volunteers at the Moveable Feast Community garden will be sowing a wildflower meadow, painting Easter eggs, planting seeds and offering seasonal soup and entertainment.

All three gardens will be open from 10am to 3pm tomorrow.
