Things are looking up for the former Towner

IT has been a positive week for the old Towner gallery.

There is now terrific support for a campaign group whose aim is to save the old Manor House building, which formerly housed the Towner Art Gallery and museum. Measures have been taken to protect it, and lead that was stolen from the roof has been recovered – it has been found in wheelie bins abandoned around the town.

At the second meeting of the action group – which is now known as the Old Towner Project – a report was given on the present state of the building, which has suffered from deterioration and vandalism over the past three years.

The group welcomed the news that the new owner, who bought the building to turn into luxury flats, has started repairs to make it weatherproof, fencing has been installed to mark the boundary to the property and more security is in place.

Liberal Democrat councillor Carolyn Heaps has been talking to young people in Old Town about facilities and activities the council could help introduce and fellow councillor Rebecca Madell has spoken to police, who have agreed to make it a hot-spot patrol area.

The Old Towner Project will meet again in a month's time to monitor how things are progressing and to discuss all future ideas. Anyone interested in supporting it should contact Helen Warren on 731792 or e-mail her via hw.oldtowner

n LIB DEM councillor Rebecca Madell has hit back at Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson over comments made in last week's Eastbourne Herald.

The Tory MP said he feared an arson attack on the building and called for immediate action from the Lib Dem-led council.

Cllr Madell said this week, "It was his administration that sold the building for a reasonable price yet did not put any conditions in place regarding the protection of the building."
