Thief targeting bags at Horntye Park sports pitch
A THIEF was caught in the act trying to steal from bags left at the side of the synthetic pitch at Horntye Park.
During the last three weeks, the sports complex has been targeted by a young man who is regularly seen on site.
On Sunday morning he was spotted dipping his hand into bags left in the dug outs at the side of the pitch by young hockey players during a South Saxons Hockey Club coaching session.
The man was seen by a player with his hand inside a bag. He had cut through metal fencing and hidden behind the dug out out of view.
But when one of the coaches challenged him he sped off on a black BMX bike.
On Tuesday, February 5, two mobile phones were taken from bags while South Saxons junior side The Warriors trained in the evening.
On Saturday February 2, a wallet containing £100 belonging to a player from Crowborough Hockey Club vanished during his visit to Horntye Park.
Earlier that week, a thief broke into a car belonging to a member of staff and stole his sat nav system.
Before Christmas, a member of South Saxons Hockey Club had his wallet stolen from his car parked in the main
car park. Warning signs have now been placed around the site.
Horntye Park general manager, Kevin Miller is offering a £100 reward leading to prosecution. He said: “We do have CCTV and will be looking to upgrade and expand the system in the near future to cover more of the Horntye Site and surrounding area.
“I would urge our customers to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious immediately to a duty manager and the police.”
