A POPULAR watering hole is the toast of the town after scooping a top industry award.

The Dolphin Inn in Rock-a-Nore Road has been named CAMRA South East Sussex Pub of the Year.

Delighted landlord Mark Little said the award, given by the Campaign For Real Ale, was evidence that the team’s hard work had paid off.

He said: “It is fantastic. We have worked hard to try to achieve this and it’s lovely that people have realised the level of commitment we have had.

“Everyone is on a high at the moment.”

First and foremost the pub was judged on its beer, including the way that it is presented, while other deciding factors included the staff and the ambience of the pub.

It is a real family affair as Mark runs the pub along with his wife Maureen, and daughters Laura and Louise.

He said, paying tribute to all the staff: “It’s not just me. To achieve things like this you need to be part of a good team.

“This is a pat on the back for everybody.

“I also thank all my customers for coming on a journey with us.”

Mark said that crucial to the pub’s success was offering something really good.

The pub currently serves six real ales, and Mark said the aim was to offer a menu for beer in the same way as for food, in order to appeal to a wider audience.

The full presentation from CAMRA is in June, and The Dolphin could be in the running for a regional award.

“We are glad just to have won this award,” Mark said.

CAMRA, established in 1971, campaigns for real ale, communitypubs, and drinkers’ rights.
