Tasters select meals on wheels contract
A panel of older people has helped the county council decide which company should win the county-wide meals in the community contract, in a blind tasting session.
The lucky panellists — each one a member of an Older People's Forum across East Sussex — tested a range of hot dishes, from chicken pie to beef casserole, and judged the meals on their flavour and appealing appearance.
After working their way through a main course, the panel were asked if they could squeeze in a bit of dessert — and the evaluation process started again.
The contract was subsequently awarded by the county council to Apetito, on December 7. Of all the companies which entered the tender process, Apetito was judged to offer the best value in terms of both quality and price.
Cllr Bill Bentley, lead member for adult social care, said, "If you're struggling to prepare a hot meal each day, why not talk to social care direct about the possibility of meals on wheels?
"It's a fantastic service, and one which people really appreciate, especially in the winter when it's cold outside."
Graham Russell, the managing director of Apetito Community Meals, said, "Apetito is very proud to be re-awarded this contract and we are committed to delivering a world-class community meals service to East Sussex which will continually develop and be enhanced throughout the life of the new contract."
