Talks reveal fascinating story of Fromelles
THE FASCINATING story of soldiers from the First World War who were buried almost a century after their deaths, will be told in a series of talks in Eastbourne next weekend.
The talks follow the recent opening ceremony of the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) cemetery in northern France, where Australian and British soldiers from the 1916 Battle of Fromelles were recovered from mass graves and buried with full military honours.
Eastbourne-based military bookseller and publisher Tommies Guides is proud to be presenting the UK's only dedicated series of talks on the subject at Eastbourne College Theatre on August 7.
Ryan Gearing, of Tommies Guides, said, "This event will throw more light on the Fromelles project and allow members of the public, who did not make it to the Fromelles ceremony, the chance to learn more first hand."
Julie Summers, compiling editor of the official book Remembering Fromelles, will be discussing the project and the birth of the Imperial War Graves Commission, which subsequently became the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).
She will describe how the organisation works and how it how it built the new cemetery, its first since the end of the Second World War.
Military author Paul Cobb will discuss the Battle of Fromelles and how the mass graves came into being, and how they were lost behind enemy lines for more than 90 years.
Archaeology expert Kate Brady will explain the work involved in the recovery of the bodies and what can be learnt about them. Dr Nicholas Saunders from Bristol University will discuss 20th Century Battlefield Archaeology including the latest developments in the field.
Proceeds from ticket sales will support the military charities SSAFA and Combat Stress.
Tickets are priced 12.50 and 10 for concessions and are available in advance and on the door. Doors open at 12.30pm, starting at 1.00pm.
