A FORMER councillor’s Christmas appeal drew massive support this year.

Richard Stevens’ annual Sock Appeal saw more socks than ever being donated to Surviving Christmas, the charity which provides hospitality to those in need locally over the festive break.

Mr Stevens, who has been running the appeal for 18 years, said that the response from the public in 2012 broke all records.

He said: “I collected 10 black sacks full of new, warm socks from the Information Centre alone. There were at least three more from the Creative Media Centre in Robertson Street.

“I took all the collected socks to Surviving Christmas, which is held at the YMCA in St Paul’s Road, on Christmas Day and they were very well received indeed.

“It renews your faith in people and I am overwhelmed by the generosity shown. Some kind person had even knitted a whole bag full of scarves and gloves.

“I would like to say a big thank you to those who offered locations for the Sox Boxes and a special thank you to all those who donated. The true spirit of Christmas is undoubtedly alive and well in Hastings.”
