Sledgehammer thieves strike

THIEVES used sledgehammers to steal luxury watches from one of the town's top jewellers on Monday afternoon.

Three robbers approached Brufords in Cornfield Terrace just before 5pm and smashed one of the windows before grabbing a number of expensive items.

An eye witness, who did not want to be named, said, "We saw three men in boiler suits and balaclavas jump out of a car and smash the window with sledgehammers.

"It took them around five or six hits and they made two holes in the window before piling expensive watches into a bag.

"They then drove off in a blue Renault Clio with the registration number LV04 AOS.

"I guess the whole thing lasted about two to three minutes and it happened at around 4.45pm. I phoned the police immediately.

"The window they smashed was the one with the Rolex and Breitling watches inside and they actually dropped four of them on the pavement.

"It was just like watching Crimewatch."

It is believed the three men drove their getaway vehicle up to the Memorial Roundabout and cut-up a motorist before dumping the small blue hatchback in nearby Wish Road.

Witnesses have reported seeing the three men, two in blue suits and one in white, swap their Renault for a BMW.

Sussex Police ask anyone who saw the smash and grab or has information on the sledgehammer-wielding offenders to call Sergeant Dave Tye on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 1188 of January 21.

Alternatively, you can leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
