Show your support for Observer's Hastings Pier campaign and put up a poster

The Observer today steps up its campaign to save Hastings Pier by giving every reader a poster to put in their window.

Last week the paper handed over a 3,000 name strong petition to Hastings Borough Council leader Jeremy Birch demanded the authority acts before it is too late.

And this week we are urging all our readers to show their support for our campaign - and the work being done by the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust - by putting our poster on display.

The eye-catching yellow design (available in this week's paper) can be cut out from your Observer and is the perfect size and colour to draw attention from any passing councillors.

And with the Observer selling on average nearly 20,000 copies a week, it should help send a clear message to the powers that be that the town is serious about saving the much-loved Victorian pier.

Our petition urged councillors to secure a compulsory purchase order from current owners Ravenclaw and hand over ownership to the trust.

And our poster campaign was more music to the ears' of the determined band of lobbyists.

Angela Davis, spokesman for the trust, said: "We are urging residents to show their support by displaying the Observer poster in their windows.

"We want to emphasise that, even with the positive news of the last few weeks, there is still a lot of work to do to give Hastings the pier it deserves.

"The support from Hastings' residents continues to be a huge help in achieving this goal."

It was a sentiment shared by her colleague Jess Steele, who added: "Let's show just how important the pier is to this town and our determination to bring it to life again."

The pier has been closed since 2006 amid health and safety fears. Since then it has stood empty, robbing the town of an estimated 750,000 visitors and millions of pounds in tourism income.

Observer editor-in-chief Keith Ridley issued a rallying call to readers. "This is such an important issue for the town," he said. "We need to all make our voices heard so put up your poster. Together we can save the pier."
