Sheila raises £1,000 plus for St Michael’s at her 70th

A PENSIONER decided to celebrate her 70th birthday with a difference by raising money for charity.

Sheila Mayatt, of Bembrook Road, chose to forgo all cards and presents this year in aid of St Leonards-based charity St Michael’s Hospice.

She and her husband Bert hosted a party at West Hill Community Hall last Saturday (February 2), inviting guests to make donations to the charity.

In the end more than £1,000 was collected for St Michael’s Hospice.

Sheila said: “We had more than 150 family and friends turn up at the party on Saturday, who had come from all over the UK.

“I thought if I raised around £500 I would be happy, so was not expecting to raise more than £1,000 in the end. I am really pleased.

Sheila collected £1,060 in total on Saturday for St Michael’s Hospice.

She added: “I decided to raise money for the hospice because a lot of people in our family have suffered from cancer. My father died of cancer aged 60 and so did my brother when he was 55. My sister-in-law has also got bone cancer.

“On Saturday we also had friends with us who have had the disease.”

Sheila and her husband have also known other friends who have needed care at St Michael’s Hospice.

Since the hospice, based in Upper Maze Hill, opened in 1987 it has cared for more than 12,500 people with life limiting illnesses in the Hastings and Rother area.

It also provides care, not only within the hospice, but also in the community. Many patients are cared for at home with nursing support or night sitting services.

The hospice also has a Day Therapy Centre.
