Bloodrunner volunteer Mark Bourner from St Leonards who was injured after a collision with a car.
A MOTORCYCLIST sustained serious injuries after being struck by a car while en route to deliver blood products to the Conquest Hospital.
Mark Bourner, 44, of Kent Road, St Leonards, collided with the BMW in Battle Road at the junction with Upper Church Road, St Leonards, on New Year’s Day at around 11.30pm.
He sustained a broken tibia in his left leg, as well as bruising and dislocated ankle and has been left unable to walk for at least six weeks.
Mr Bourner volunteers for SERV Sussex, also known as the Bloodrunners, a charity which transports blood and other products to hospitals around the county.
He said: “I was called out on a blood run to go to Hooley in Surrey to pick up platelets that needed to be delivered to the Conquest.
“When I got to the bottom of Old Church Road in order to cross the road towards Upper Church Road, someone jumped the lights driving down Battle Road and I collided with the side of the car.”
Mr Bourner, who also works for Booker and Best, was not even on call by SERV Sussex but offered to do the job that evening.
The father-of-three added: “I suffered a broken tibia in the lower part of my left leg, as well as a dislocated ankle.
“I had to have a plate put in my leg with several screws to help heal the break.
“I now can’t put any weight on my leg for six weeks, can’t walk without crutches and someone has had to lend me a wheelchair. It’s so frustrating that the driver didn’t stop. At the end of the day I could have been left dead in the road.
“I was doing something I enjoy when I was knocked off my motorbike. SERV Sussex does a great job.
“To be honest there is no point in being angry but it will be frustrating if the driver isn’t found.”
Mr Bourner is also unable to drive until his injury has healed but seeing as his job is office-based he is hoping he will be able to work from home.
Police are now hunting the driver of the BMW car involved in the accident with Mr Bourner’s Honda motorbike. They said the car then headed south along Battle Road.
PC Barry Freeman, from Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, said: “We are appealing to the driver to come forward or for anyone who knows them or saw what happened to contact us on 101 quoting serial 2025 of 01/01 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk.”
