School praised by inspectors
STAFF and pupils at a St Leonards school are celebrating after received a good Ofsted report from inspectors.
Hollington Primary School was a Level 2 rating, classing it as ‘good’ following the visit last month.
It was an improvement from an inspection in 2009 which labelled the school as ‘satisfactory’.
Gavin Jones, lead inspector, praised pupils’ behaviour and added that by the time they reached Year 6 children had made ‘outstanding progress’ in maths and reading and ‘good progress’ in writing.
He said: “Children enter the school with skills that are generally low. Previous weaker teaching has meant that there has been a legacy of underachievement. Better teaching and good support have helped many pupils catch up previously lost ground.
“Pupils’ average point scores have improved year on year in English and mathematics to average levels in 2012.
“Teachers have good relationships with their pupils, resulting in most lessons being typified by effective management of behaviour.
“Pupils behave well in lessons and around the school. Their good behaviour supports their learning well. They show good attitudes to work, are motivated and happy to share their learning experiences with their friends.”
Ofsted inspectors added that Hollington Primary School had a strong management which checked on the quality of teaching.
Mr Jones said: “The headteacher offers strong leadership which has been central to guiding his team in bringing about improvements. The senior leadership team works well alongside staff as coaches.
“The local authority (East Sussex County Council), in the past, has had to play a strong role in guiding the school. More recently, because of the relentless drive of the headteacher and his team, it has been able to keep a more watching brief over the school, providing helpful advice when required.
“The headteacher and governors have worked well to eradicate a very large inherited deficit, without losing the ability to make improvements to the school and maintain resources.”
John Smith, the school’s headteacher, said: “This is a splendid result for the whole community and recognises the good work that goes on here. I am proud of the whole team and their commitment to making Hollington Primary School a good place for our children to learn.”
