Residents putting together cookbook
RESIDENTS of a supported housing scheme for homeless families and single people in Hastings are putting together a cookbook for would-be chefs in search of inspiration.
Sanctuary Supported Living’s Priory Avenue residents are busy working together to create a compendium of recipes, drawn from their favourite dishes, for themselves and others.
Fiona Knight, manager, said working on the book had brought residents even closer together through their appreciation of good food.
She said: “Compiling this book is all part of the skills training that helps boost their independence, as it involves them going out to find ideas for recipes and putting them together.
“There are very strong bonds of trust between our residents, so they will be putting a lot of stock in the dishes drawn up by each other.”
Families and friends have been visiting the scheme on a regular basis to help put dishes together for inclusion in the book, which will be produced on the scheme’s premises. It will not just be the residents who benefit, as the scheme will be selling the books on to the public for a nominal fee, in a move designed to not only pay for continued cooking skills sessions, but raise public awareness of Priory Avenue in Hastings.
Work on the recipe guide follows another Priory Avenue fundraising effort, when resident Paul Govan walked 20 miles from Hastings to Bexhill and back in December in support of current and former clients’ group Moving On, Moving Up. He raised £165 in sponsorship through the trip with project workers Cathy Willows and Maureen Curzon, who is also the Sanctuary liaison with Moving On, Moving Up, a charity in its own right.
The funds will be spent on treats for its members, such as Christmas meals, trips to the pantomime and workshops for skills like cooking.
Priory Avenue offers supported housing for single people and homeless families aged 16 to 64, covering any and all at risk groups.
Part of housing and care provider Sanctuary Group, Sanctuary Supported Living provides accommodation and support to more than 6,000 disadvantaged or vulnerable people in the UK.
