Remembrance Day in Alexandra Park

Hundreds of residents and former servicemen paid their respects to fallen comrades at Sunday's Remembrance services.

Standard bearers and ex-soldiers, police cadets, active servicemen, guides and scouts paraded through town led my Hastings mayor Maureen Charlesworth and Canon Keith Pound.

They paraded from the town hall to the war memorial in Alexandra Park where a two-minute silence was observed.

A short ceremony at the War Memorial in Alexandra Park on Saturday marked the start of Poppy Week, when Mayor Maureen Charlesworth planted the first cross in the Garden of Remembrance to honour members of the armed forces who have served during wartime.

In the evening, a service and parade of standard bearers formed part of the Festival of Remembrance at the White Rock Theatre.

Remembrance services were also held at churches across the borough on Sunday and many schools hosted special assemblies during the week to honour those who have fallen while serving their country.

Cllr Charlesworth said: "Sunday saw a wonderful turnout and a great deal of support from people in Hastings."

Marking the anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Royal British Legion also organised a two minutes' silence in Priory Meadow shopping centre on Tuesday at 11am.
