Winkle Club in Hastings receives a donation from the police

The Winkle Club of Hastings Old Town has been awarded £250 from Hastings police to fund improvements to the seating area and notice boards on Winkle Island, Rock ‘a’ Nore Road.

The club was set up in 1900 by a group of local fisherman to help under privileged families in the Hastings Old Town.

This has continued to the present day with the Winkle Club still going strong supporting local good causes.

Richard Steven, Winkle Club vice-chairman, said: “We are very grateful to Sussex Police for making this generous donation to our 112 year-old charity.

“The Winkle Club has a proud history of raising money for local good causes.

“We run on an entirely voluntary basis and depend upon donations and fund-raising events throughout the year.

“This money will help us to continue to be able to help numerous organisations and individual needs within our town.

“At Christmas time for instance we deliver over 50 parcels of essential foodstuffs to local people who we think would appreciate a little help during these tough times.

“Our renewed thanks go to Sussex Police for their generosity.”

The donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund (PPAF), made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold.
