THE winners of an annual photography competition which this year challenged entrants to capture the ‘colour’ of The Stade, produced work that was more experimental than in previous years.
Cliff Willard’s digital deconstruction of a section of a fishing boat, and Dave Hale’s net huts, came out top in the adult category, with Jon Bedford’s close-up view of the new winkle highly commended.
In the under 16 category Josie Barnes impressed with her photograph of the amusement arcade.
This year’s Stade Open Photography Competition saw more than 300 submissions, and competition was stiff.
All the judges, Jeremy Birch, leader of Hastings Borough Council, Yasmin Ornsby chair of the Stade Partnership, and photographer Andrew Moran were in agreement that the standard of photography was higher than ever.
This year many entrants had seized the opportunity for a one-to-one with photographer Grace Lau, who said: “Contributors have seen around and through the obvious photographs and have searched out hidden aspects of The Stade.”
Judge Andrew Moran said: “There were some really, really high quality entries, lots of them were very experimental, testing the title Stade Colour.
“We found that we were very much attracted to the experimental work, though it was all excellent.
“The photographs are sharp, selective and discerning this year. The winning selection will surprise the audience”.
Winner Cliff Willard, 53, from Bexhill, had submitted a series of three colourful abstract works of which one was chosen.
Cliff, who runs a portrait photography business, said: “It is really nice to be chosen, it was taken especially for the competition. I wouldn’t have been surprised if a more pictorial image had been chosen.”
There were approximately twenty photographers from the under 16 age group. Of Josie Barnes’s entry, Andrew said: “We were very impressed by the vision and how she had selected and taken the photograph - worthy of a more mature photographer.”
An exhibition of selected photographs will be at the Fishermen’s Museum, Shipwreck Museum and the Blue Reef Aquarium from Saturday, October 20 until Sunday, November 25.
Visitors to the exhibition can vote for the fourth winner, the People’s Choice, to be announced on November 7.
The three adult winners will each receive a £50 voucher to be spent in Marriotts Photo Store and the under 16 winner a year’s family membership to the Blue Reef Aquarium. Prizes are to be presented by Cllr Birch at the opening on tomorrow (Saturday) between 5pm and 7pm.
