People warned Hastings Pier is dangerous
Locals eager to catch a glimpse of what remains of Hastings Pier are being urged to keep their distance.
Eight fire crews battled this morning's blaze, which destroyed as much as 90 per cent of the Victorian structure.
Police later moved crowds back as far as the Pig in Paradise as smoke billowed along the seafront.
The large stretch of the A259 has remained closed all day (between Warrior Square and Robertson Street) and Hastings Borough Council was unable to say when it was likely to re-open.
And a spokesman for the local authority - which first closed the pier more than four years ago - warned souvenir hunters and photographers to keep their distance.
Caroline Kelly said: "The pier remains in a very dangerous state and we are telling people to stay well away from it as the risk of collapse is high.
"Under no circumstances should people attempt to gain access under the pier at this time."
