Pensioner rescued by coastguards after getting lost

A coastguard helicopter was dispatched to rescue a pensioner who had got lost in Hastings Country Park.

The 79-year-old phoned police at around 11pm on Thursday (June 25) to say he had been walking around Ecclesbourne Glen and had hurt his back and could not move.

Police informed Dover Coastguard before Hastings coastguards and the helicopter from Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire was sent out to join in the search.

Frank O'Neil, watch manager for Dover Coastguard, said: "He had no idea where he was but fortunately he was able to guide our teams in to his location by use of his mobile phone and hearing our approach.

"He was found in the Ecclesbourne Glen area just after midnight on Friday."

The pensioner was taken to the Conquest Hospital after suffering the effects of the cold.
