Park bench commemorates Billie-Jo Jenkins
A bench has been unveiled in Alexandra Park today, Saturday, in memory of murdered schoolgirl Billie-Jo Jenkins.
The 13-year-old Helenswood pupil was killed on February 15 in 1997 and her death led to a multi-million pound search for the killer.
Billie-Jo's foster father Sion Jenkins was convicted of her murder in 1998 but a second appeal in 2004 was successful and in 2006 he was found not guilty at a retrial.
Now, more than a decade on from her death,a lasting monument to the popular teenager has been made.
A 'child-friendly' bench in Alexandra Park, only a stones throw from Billie-Jo's Lower Park Road home, was unveiled by councillor Godfrey Daniel on Saturday.
Friends of Billie-Jo raised the money for the bench which has been designed by local artist Joc O'Hare.
It is a long, low bench made from locally felled English Oak and has been engraved with a message to Billie-Jo from her friends.
Some of Billie-Jo's family and friends from London attended the ceremony which took place at 11.30am.
