Paramedics help save man’s life in rough sea

TWO paramedics have been praised for saving a man’s life after he was swept away by rough seas.

Ashleigh Fairs and Joanne Hernandez spotted the man in his 20s on a rock off the beach opposite Warrior Square Gardens on January 27 at around 8.15pm.

He was with a group of other men and ran into difficulties. The coastguard was called before paramedics came on scene.

After the man was swept off the rock Mr Fairs jumped in the sea and brought him to shore.

Nigel Hammond, clinical operations manager for Hastings and Rye at South East Coast Ambulance Service, said: “Ash told me he could not stand and watch the man being pummelled by the waves and he was sure he would not survive if they stood and watched.

“The patient was cold and tired and would have been taken by the water very quickly.

“I have no doubt that the actions of the both Jo and Ash and especially Ash’s actions saved the life of this patient. This took immense courage and physical strength to bring the patient safely to shore and the patient was very grateful for Ash’s help. I’m very proud of his quick thinking and actions.”
