Ore pub to be replaced with flats
A WELL-KNOWN 106-year-old pub is going to be demolished to make way for flats.
The New Clive Vale, at the corner of Old London Road and Alfred Road in Ore, will be knocked down and replaced by ten flats for people with learning difficulties.
Despite misgivings about the number of flats, parking and the design of the new building the Hastings Borough Council planning committee approved the scheme on Wednesday.
It will be four storeys high and include three one bedroom flats and seven two bedroom flats. Omar al-Hasso, of developers 161 Living Limited, said East Sussex County Council adult social care department saw these kinds of projects as a "strategic priority."
And Ray Crawford, the HBC planing officer, said: "It is a prominent building but it has been vacant for a long time and it is not listed."
Objector Aubrey Ingleton complained that not enough thought had been put into the best way to house people with learning difficulties and compared this application to the plans to move residents of Osborne House, on The Ridge, down to Queen's Road.
The New Clive Vale site already had planning permission for a six flat development and Cllr Anne Bird, who represents Ore, said: "Most residents would be pleased to see that area tidied up and put into use, so a sympathetic development would not be objected to. But ten flats is too many and the design is overpowering.
"As for parking every evening there are people chasing round the streets desperately trying to find somewhere to park and Ore is saturated with parked cars."
The council's highways manager though felt the four parking spaces planned was enough and new chairman of the committee Cllr Godfrey Daniel said: "This used to be a pub and a hotel which would have produced a lot of parking itself.
"This is a gateway building for Ore and has not done Ore any favours for many years now."
The scheme was approved by majority vote.
