Not long now until the Olympic Torch
DETAILED times of the arrival of the Olympic Torch have been released as the countdown to the relay continues.
With just under three weeks left, the Eternal Flame will arrive in Hastings and St Leonards on Tuesday, July 17 at 5.58pm at Bridge Way, then travel along Bexhill Road, past Grosvenor Gardens at 6.10pm and then along the seafront, passing Warrior Square at 6.30pm, the pier, 6.35pm and into Robertson Street, back onto the seafront at Harold Place at 6.40pm, continuing along the seafront, past the fountain (6.43pm) and arriving at the evening event at the Stade Open Space.
Thousands of people are set to descend on the seafront to see the Olympic Torch as volunteers bring it along to The Stade.
As well popular rappers Rizzle Kicks, there will be acrobatic and dance performances. An evening stage show will include a dance routine, led by Helenswood School, and a community choir led by Hastings Philharmonic Choir.
There will be a 10-minute pyrotechnic display fired from Hastings Castle at 9.30pm, to mark the end of the day’s celebrations.
Hastings Lions are organising a putting competition and a bowling competition in Grosvenor Gardens, and also a fun bike ride between Grosvenor Gardens and Glyne Gap on the cycle route. The Lions are also providing a large screen in Grosvenor Gardens to relay the Stade event.
The Gensing and Central St Leonards Forum is holding the St Leonards Festival in Warrior Square on July 17 instead of the previous Saturday to coincide with the event. This will be an alcohol free event, but will include food and other stalls, with an international community feel to it.
Hastings Runners are organizing a Family Fun Run between the pier and a point near to the Breeds Place fountain on behalf of St Michael’s Hospice, between 3pm and 5pm. This event will be stewarded throughout, and is timed to finish one hour before the torch arrives.
There will be a Big Top themed event in Hastings town centre. There will be some ‘pop up’ performances in lower Queens Road.
There will be a road closure from the pier to the junction of Old London Road and Mount Pleasant Road from 2pm to 11pm. Through traffic will be diverted via Harley Shute Road and The Ridge and local traffic into town via the Ring Road. There will be a rolling road closure from Bridge Way starting at around 5pm and ending at the pier at around 6.35pm. The rolling road closure will be lifted as the convoy passes significant road junctions. In the Old Town, Croft Road will remain open, as will High Street, also All Saints Street and The Bourne as far as Courthouse Street. The eastern side of Courthouse Street, between All Saints Street and The Bourne, will have its one-way system reversed
