New flats can be moved into early to ease residents’ wait

DEVELOPERS have been given the go-ahead to allow residents to move into 18 new flats before completing the rest of the site.

London-based BGR Developments applied for a variation in conditions to allow the site in Mount Pleasant Road to be built and occupied in phases.

Planning committee members heard earlier this month the company was originally granted permission to build 20 houses and 18 flats in August 2008.

The 18-flat block is almost complete but the developer now wants to sign them off first so they can be occupied before the rest of the houses are built.

A written report to the committee by planning officer Samuel Batchelor stated it would not be appropriate for drainage work to be carried out on the houses before the flats were developed.

Orbit Housing Association also wants the flats’ sign-off as soon as possible as there are residents in much need of accommodation.

The committee received three letters of objection about the plans.

Residents complained there had been delays in opening a public footpath that runs through the site and repair work to Broomgrove Road had been unsatisfactory.

They were also concerned about surface run-off, highway and pedestrian safety and the risk to the public from the development.

But councillors were satisfied the variations of conditions were acceptable and there would be no material harm to the neighbourhood in general. All nine members unanimously voted in favour of the application.

Councillor Matthew Beaver said: “This is a sensible way forward.”
