New link road camp set up

ANTI-LINK ROAD protestors have established a new camp in an effort to save hedgerows from being destroyed.

Ivy Camp has been established as a new base, and is situated between Glover’s Farm and Acton’s Farm, near Sidley.

Patrick Nicholson, a member of the Combe Haven Defenders, said: “We are racing against the clock to stop the contractors from cutting the hedgerows before March 1.

“This is the date the nesting season begins, and work must stop.”

He added: “Some of the hedgerows in the valley are very old. You can tell that by the diversity of species.

“Some of the hedgerows date back to 1066.”

Kathryn Langley, East Sussex County Council spokeswoman, said: “Extensive ecological surveys have been carried out to ensure all works are carried out in accordance with environmental legislation and regulations; and all work is being done under the supervision of ecologists to ensure we meet our responsibilities with regard to animal protection.

“We will continue to work with security and the police, where appropriate, to ensure these works can continue to be carried out safely.”

The previous protest camp was evicted at the end of last month.

On February 12, protestors gathered outside County Hall, in Lewes.

They went on to disrupt a meeting of the county council by delivering a three-metre section of felled tree to the council chamber.

Preparatory work on the £94 million Bexhill-Hastings Link Road began in December last year.
