DETECTIVES hunting the killer of a homeless Hastings man who was battered to death in Hove have issued a new photograph of him living rough.

The body of Lea Williams was found in an archway near the seafront pitch and putt at 8.30pm on February 11.

A post mortem revealed that the 45-year-old died from severe injuries to his face and head caused by a heavy object. Other injuries to his body included multiple fractures to his ribs.

Lea had been living there for around 12 months after being forced to leave a caravan site and had been battling alcohol addiction.

The last reported sighting of Lea was on the morning of Sunday, February 10 in the archways.

Detectives found this photograph of him in a bundle next to his body.

Detective inspector Wendy Burton, of Surrey and Sussex major crime team, said: “We would really like to speak to the person who took this photograph.

“They may have taken others or have information that could help with our enquiries.

“The exact date that the photograph was taken is not known but it was printed locally last October.

“I’m hoping that as the photograph shows Lea in the ‘bat caves’ with three other men it may also jog some people’s memory who knew him and have not yet come forward.”

“Although Lea was quite a private person, he did have some friends and was known to staff from the many homeless projects in the area.

“Everyone is devastated by his brutal death and want justice for him. If you knew Lea, or you are the person who took this photograph, then please call Sussex Police 101 quoting Op Depot.

“Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
