A BODY found in the New Forest is believed to be that of Old Town resident Norman Race who vanished last summer.

The 62-year-old, who lived in George Street, was last spotted speaking to a friend on August 6 on Bexhill seafront, when he said he was camping up north’. He was reported missing by his family on September 4.

A body of a man was discovered in woods near Winchester in Hampshire on January 15, which police believe to be that of Mr Race.

Sussex Police spokeswoman, Jennifer Nuttall said: “The body of a man found in woods near Winchester on Tuesday 15 January, is believed to be that of Norman Race. His sister has been informed accordingly. However formal identification may take some weeks. Hamsphire Constabulary are not treating the death as suspicious and the Hampshire Coroners Officer is dealing with the identification, in liaison with Sussex Police.”

Family and friends this week paid tribute to him.

Mr Race’s sister Lilian Gibbins said: “The news of my brother’s body being found has been very difficult. He will be a great loss within the family. He was a very complex and private character at the same time also presenting a caring extrovert.

“Norman was most happy living in the Old Town and became a important part to the community. He was very much loved and involved in all Old Town events. I know he will be sadly missed by many people and I would like to thank everyone in the Old Town community for all their kindness and support though this very hard time.”

Tina Gibbins, Mr Race’s niece, said: “I became very close to Norman after doing the Three Peaks Challenge.

“I admired his courage and strength.”

Kaye French, a family friend, is organising a collection to help towards giving Mr Race a proper send off.

Collection boxes have been placed in the Stag, Cinque Ports and the Jenny Lind. People can also donate via www.oldtownhastings.co.uk/norman, ring Kaye on 07791 568450 or email kayefrench@talktalk.net. .
