New double yellows to ease congestion
A CHANGE to road restrictions outside the Blue Reef Aquarium is part of ongoing work to ease traffic congestion in Rock-a-Nore Road.
From Monday (March 11) there will be double yellow lines and loading will not be permitted between 11am and 5pm.
This replaces the seasonal parking bay (October to March) and no waiting between 8am and 6pm, currently in force.
Manager of the Blue Reef Aquarium, Chris Ireland, welcomed any steps to reduce traffic congestion and said: “I think it is a brilliant change and should encourage better flow of traffic in Rock-a-Nore Road.
“I think if people’s only experience of visiting the town is sitting in traffic for hours, it is not a great representation of the town.”
Last Easter bank holiday weekend in particular, there was gridlock in Rock-a-Nore Road, with delays of 45 minutes travelling from one end of the road to the other.
Hastings Borough Council and the Foreshore Trust are currently looking at proposals for intelligent signage to direct motorists to car parks where there is space.
There are similar systems in place already in other towns.
The signs would be placed on the strategic routes into the town and redirect people to Pelham Place, Priory Street, Priory Meadow and other car parks if Rock-a-Nore car park was full and vice versa.
These proposals are still in the development stage.
A study of traffic management issues in the Old Town is currently underway, with the aim of assessing the impact of the Jerwood Gallery, the A259/Rock-a-Nore Road junction, and congestion in Rock-a-Nore Road.
East Sussex County Council appointed consultants Amey Transportation Planning Limited to carry out the study.
Jan Sellers, manager of Hastings Fisherman’s Museum, said that the traffic problems in Rock-a-Nore Road had a direct impact on footfall, which was down last year, also as a result of bad weather during the peak season.
She said: “Anything that gets traffic moving in Rock-a-Nore Road has to be a bonus.”
