Mother's anti-drugs plea after son's death

A GRIEVING mother from Ashington made a heartfelt plea for young people to steer clear of drugs at an inquest into her son's death.

Craig Chard, 18, a catering student, died on the A24 at Ashington on June 28, last year.

Sue Chard spoke out after an inquest into her son's death held yesterday (Tuesday, May 19) at Horsham Magistrates' Court, heard Mr Chard, under the influence of drink and drugs, stumbled in front of a car while crossing the road.

Post mortem tests showed he had alcohol, cocaine, ketamine and cannabis in his system.

Parents beware

In a statement handed to the court, his mother said she hoped other people would learn from her son's tragic death.

It read: "I know there are parents out there who are ignoring their child's drug taking, maybe because they are from a decent family background and feel ashamed and embarrassed.

"Well I am from a decent family background, but I am not afraid to admit my son took the wrong path, you can't choose a child's direction in life but you can be there when they need you most.

"I do not wish to see this happen again. I would urge each of you to try to deal with this situation before another young life is lost, maybe your son or daughter's."

Stumbled into road

The inquest was told how Mr Chard seemed to stumble as he crossed the A24 and smashed into a car.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mrs Schofield said: "At the time of this incident, Craig was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, having been out socially that evening.

"It does not appear that he was aware of the oncoming car. I'm quite satisfied that this was a tragic accident."

Full details of the inquest appear in the Worthing Herald tomorrow (Thursday, May 21).
