A GREAT-grandmother who once acted in plays for German radio after the Second World War marked her 101st birthday last Friday (January 25).

Marjorie Davies, also known as Margot, lives at Mountside Residential Home in Laton Road, and was born in Hastings in the Clive Vale area in 1912.

Her father Phillip Sidney Moon was a master painter and decorator and had his workshop in the Old Titus Oats barn near the Stables Theatre.

As a child Marjorie had rheumatic fever and later had to give up office work. She became a nanny.

She came from a large family, having six brothers, who have all since passed away.

In her early years the family moved to Kent House in the High Street in the Old Town.

The pensioner married her husband Peter Davies at the beginning of the Second World War in 1939.

They were both keen bowlers and her greatest claim to fame was winning the Sussex bowling pairs for Falaise Bowling Club. Peter, who died in 1996, was club president.

The couple lived in Germany for 18 years as Peter served in the Army in the 1950s. Marjorie then worked for Radio Bremen as an actress, performing in many radio plays.

Marjorie celebrated her 100th birthday last January with family and friends and received a card from the Queen.

Last Friday she hosted a party at the Isobel Blackman Centre. Guests included her daughters Jenepher and Wendy and her niece Pat Upton, nephew Peter Moon, her granddaughter with her two children and her great-granddaughter Arianne.

The pensioner has two daughters, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren in total.
