THE LAST remaining anti-Link Road campaigners were removed from the third protest camp before tree-felling began on Wednesday afternoon.
A number of people had remained locked on to trees in Crowhurst. The total number of protestors arrested now stands at 26.
This latest developmentin the stand-off over the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road came as a High Court decision was due today (Friday), after one campaigner started legal action to force East Sussex County Council (ESCC) to stop work on what he believes is the original Battle of Hastings site.
Michael Bernard, of Bexhill Link Road Resistance (BLINKRR,) applied for an injunction to force the county council to wait until English Heritage makes its decision whether or not to re-register Combe Haven Valley as a battlefield.
Amid the eviction of the third camp, which began on Monday (January 28), anti-link road protestors accused the council of putting their lives at risk by refusing to provide food, painkillers and respite to activists occupying trees in gale force winds.
On Monday evening, around a dozen activists occupied the treetops in Crowhurst as protests against the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road (BHLR) continued.
ESCC refused the activists’ requests for food and painkillers and said if protestors left the trees they would be cut down.
It added that any protestor leaving the site would not be allowed to return.
The protestors had hoped that ESCC would agree to a ‘truce’ to allow them to leave the trees temporarily because of the poor weather conditions.
Rupert Clubb, director of economy, transport and environment at ESCC said at the time: “If protestors are hungry or thirsty or need other supplies they can leave the site at any time.
“If those that are up trees wish or need to leave we will help them do so safely and we have made this clear to them.
“They will not be allowed back on site.”
