Jerwood latest: Stade plans to be resubmitted

Controversial plans to develop the Stade to accommodate the Jerwood Gallery will have to be resubmitted.

Bosses at Hastings Borough Council will have to re-think the proposals after their initial applications failed to refer to objections from residents concerned about traffic problems.

Had the plans remained unchanged they could have resulted in delays to the multi-million pound scheme, which councillors hope will completely revamp the Old Town.

So, to speed things up, council staff say they will simply resubmit the Stade proposals, which relate to the open space, education centre and new cafe.

Kevin Boorman, the council manager responsible for the project, explained: "It has been suggested that the original planning reports did not make full reference to one particular objection that had been made. This was in respect of the traffic management arrangements associated with the plans.

"Challenging these suggestions would only have delayed the project. We think the easiest way to deal with this procedural irregularity is for the planning applications to be resubmitted, and reheard by planning committee.

"Our own architects, and those working for the Jerwood Foundation, have been working hard on developing their proposals for the site. The challenging deadlines for the project can still be met by dealing with the objection in this way."

The proposed new gallery will house the Jerwood Foundation's extensive collection of international. However, not everyone has welcomed the plans. Some traders in the Old Town are concerned that the subsequent relocation of the coach park will hit their takings.

Others have criticised gallery bosses after it was announced local people would have to pay to view the collection.

Despite these concerns, the council has vowed to plough ahead after a public consultation showed the majority of locals were in favour.
