Janet’s Sahara trek for cancer charity

A WOMAN is trekking more than 100 kilometres (60 miles) across part of the Sahara Desert later this month to raise money for cancer sufferers.

Janet Shoesmith, 50, of Bexhill Road, St Leonards, sets off next Saturday (March 23) for seven days across Morocco in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Her trip will take in various parts of the desert, crossing the Maider El Kbir plateau and visiting nomadic communities that live in the region.

It also involves a challenging climb up Jebel Lamrakeb, taking in views of the rocky desert landscape, walking through palm gorges, en route to the dunes of Boulaadam.

Her trip has been organised by Charity Challenge, a body that organises more than 100 expeditions each year for numerous charities.

Mrs Shoesmith said: I decided to do this as it’s a personal challenge for me. I turned 50 last summer.

“I have also had friends pass away through cancer. I chose to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care because I don’t think anyone has not been touched by cancer whether it’s been themselves, relatives or friends.”

Two years ago Mrs Shoesmith came ashore in a wedding dress, much to the surprise of sunbathers on St Leonards beach.

She and her husband Martin decided to hold the offbeat wedding as he is a part-time fisherman in Hastings.

Rather than asking for wedding gifts, the couple invited guests to make donations to Hastings and Pett Level RNLI, netting more than £500 for the charity.

After Mrs Shoesmith, who works as a physio assistant at the Conquest Hospital, returns from her trek in Morocco later this month, she will be hosting a charity disco at Azur, Marina Pavilion on St Leonards seafront.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 6 from 7.30pm to raise more money for the cancer charity.

Fancy dress along a Sahara theme is optional and tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children.

If anyone would like to sponsor Mrs Shoesmith in her quest to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care they can log onto her Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/janet-shoesmith.
