Iris was a pillar of the community
A WOMAN who was actively involved in the community and was the town’s first female estate agent, has died aged 93.
Iris Waterman, who lived in the same house in Cavendish Avenue, St Leonards, for 77 years, will be particularly remembered for the work she did with the local Scout movement.
Her involvement began at the outbreak of the Second World War, when the two men, Jim Flagg and Doug Wildish, who were running the Cub Pack were called up, and Iris was asked to take over.
This involvement with the cub pack, the 13th Hastings (Old St Leonards), as Akela lasted 25 years (1939 to 1964).
After that she became the District Cub Master and then in 1954 was appointed ADC for cubs and held this position until her retirement.
Born in 1919 in Hove, Iris attended the Hove High School for Girls, where she became head girl.
It was in February 1936 that Iris moved to Cavendish Avenue with her parents. She never married, and was destined to remain in that house for the rest of her life.
Outside of scouting, Iris worked as secretary for the auctioneers and estate agents F. Tanton and went on to become the first female estate agent in Hastings.
Iris was also an active member of the St Leonards Parish Church where she sang in the choir, played the organ and shared the treasurer’s duties.
Iris was the treasurer of St Leonards Traders Night Fire Watchers (during wartime), Missions to Seamen (20 years), Eversfield League of Friends (20 years), SAFE Respite Care (10 years until 2008), and WI (10 years until 2008).
She remained an active committee member of SAFE until November last year.
Dave Hazell, a neighbour of Iris’s for around 20 years, said: “She was very friendly and outgoing, doing everything for everybody.
“She was always trying to help wherever she could.”
“Iris will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know this remarkable lady.”
Iris died in hospital last Friday (January 10), following a short illness, and her funeral will take place on the Tuesday, (January 22) at St Ethelburga’s Church, Filsham Road at 12.30pm.
