Increase in Government grant for cash-strapped borough council

HASTINGS Borough Council is to receive almost £1 million in the form of a Government grant to support cash-strapped councils.

The Efficiency Saving Grant is being given to councils which will be disproportionately affected by Government cuts, to supporting them in making changes to reduce costs.

It was agreed in December last year that Hastings Borough Council would receive £850,000.

It was announced on Wednesday (February 13) that this was to be increased by local government minister Brandon Lewis, and the council is now due to receive £975,000 in March.

Council leader councillor Jeremy Birch said: “We are planning to use some of it to support the advice agencies in the town, we are giving additional money for tourism, and we are putting some more money into future efficiencies.”

He added that the grant given in the second year, would depend on savings made in the first year.

Hastings MP Amber Rudd said: “This additional funding is good news for Hastings, and shows the Government’s commitment to providing extra support for efficient councils.”
