Hastings Pier is not being demolished

Rumours spread across 1066 Country today that work had begun to demolish Hastings Pier.
Driven by misleading stories elsewhere in the press, locals arrived at work this morning convinced the fire-ravaged structure had seen its last day.

However, the Observer can confirm the crews currently on the seafront are not there to knock it down.

Instead a demolition firm has been hired by Hastings Borough Council to try and make safe the top-side of the structure - 95 per cent of which was destroyed in the blaze.

An expert engineer has been on hand to try and assess which parts of the structure need removing to make the pier safer.

So far their work has been restricted to low tide, but once the inspection is done the work could take six to eight weeks at a cost of around £200,000.

For more information on the work and plans to release a charity CD, see Friday’s Observer.
