Hastings academic wins awards for science book
AN academic from Hastings proved he is a class act by winning two awards for his latest book about 17th-century scientist Robert Boyle.
Professor Michael Hunter was this month awarded the £2,000 Samuel Pepys Award and the $5,000 Chemical Heritage Foundation’s Roy G. Neville Prize for his book Boyle: Between God and Science.
An expert in the life and works of Boyle, Professor Hunter has recently retired from 35 years lecturing in history at Birkbeck College in London.
Boyle was one of the key figures in the scientific revolution of the 17th century and a founding member of the Royal Society, but he was also conflicted by doubts about faith and conscience during his life.
The biennial Samuel Pepys Award is awarded to a book which makes the “greatest contribution” to the understanding of the famous diarist, his times or his contemporaries in the interest of encouraging scholarship.

Professor Hunter said: “I was very honoured to receive these awards.
“Boyle was a true inspiration and we can learn an awful lot from him and his work.
“I have written quite a bit on him in the past but these awards are a real feather in my cap.”
