Hastings Pier monitored amid collapse fears
Fire crews are keeping a close eye on the pier amid fears it could collapse.
The iconic attraction was 95 per cent destroyed in a suspected arson attack last night.
Cllr Phil Scott, who sits on the East Sussex Fire Authority, told the Observer that firefighters were now monitoring the structure in case it collapses.
He said the fire service is using a number of cameras to keep an eye on the underside of the pier and that steel girders and supports had been dampened in a bid to stop them giving way.
"The fire service is aware this was an unsound structure and will montitor the pier now that the flames have been brought under control," he said.
A firemen at the scene said the danger was that the steel struts and trusses could be compromised because the metal cracks if heated and then suddenly cooled.
