OLD TOWN Carnival Week got off to a flying start with the warm weather ensuring that the streets were packed with revellers.

The first event of the week was the inter pub Tug o War, in which ladies’ and men’s teams battled it out for the title outside the lifeboat station. The winning teams were both from The Dolphin pub.

Saturday saw the opening of three exhibitions at Hastings History House “Hastings in 1952”, “HAARG past present and future”, and “Anniversaries 2012”, celebrating 60 years of the Old Hastings Preservation Society, and 40 years of the Hastings Area Archaeological Research Group.

On both Saturday and Sunday the beach was packed with those enjoying performances from a line-up of local bands.

The Old Town Criers’ Competition took place on Saturday evening at Reeves Corner in High Street, and was won by Bob Heapy, while the winner of the Best Dressed Window Competition was 60A All Saints Street, with an elaborate aquatic-themed display.

On Sunday, the crowning of Hastings Old Town Carnival Queen Elle Shoesmith, was followed by the Carnival Procession, which started at Winkle Island and ended at The Stade Open Space.

Many more events took place throughout the weekend, with Carnival FM broadcasting live from the Jenny Lind, providing regular updates and interviews.
