HASTINGS was described as vibrant and attractive by Southend’s MP after he visited the town this morning (Friday).

David Amess took up the invitation by council leader Jeremy Birch to visit Hastings after he caused controversy by suggesting that some of Southend’s rivals for UK City of Culture 2017, which include Hastings and Bexhill, were “absolute dumps”.

Mr Amess’s tour included a look around the Jerwood Gallery and the fishing beach. He said: “From what I have seen thus far I think this is a vibrant town, and local residents can be proud of what you are offering here.

“I think you have as good a chance as any of the other 10 bidders.”
