Get ‘On Yer Bike’ for local good causes

CYCLISTS of all ages are being urged to get on their bikes for local good causes at this year’s upcoming On Yer Bike challenge.

St Leonards Rotary Club launched its annual event on Friday at Halfords in Ravenside Retail Park, which is also known as the Castle Cycle Challenge.

The popular fundraiser, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, takes place on Sunday, April 28, starting and finishing at the RNLI lifeboat station. Cyclists have the choice of a 25-mile route to Pevensey Castle and return, or can tackle the more strenuous 40-mile route which proceeds from Pevensey Castle to Herstmonceux Castle and returns along the Rickney Marsh road.

Entry costs £10 (minimum) for adults and £3 for under 16s.

There will also be a children’s bike race on the day along the seafront for those aged seven and under and those aged 11 and under. This will start at 10.15am and youngsters can register on the day from 10am.

The main event starts at the lifeboat station at 8.30am.

Last year only a couple of hundred cyclists took part because of bad weather but more than £6,000 was raised for charity.

Ray Howard, from St Leonards Rotary Club, said: “The weather was terrible last year, the worst we’ve ever had it since On Yer Bike started, so are hoping for good weather this year. We hope the Olympic legacy will get more people joining.”

This year, the prize for the highest amount paid in by an adult will be a flying lesson, courtesy of Lydd Aero Club. All the proceeds raised from On Yer Bike will be divided between St Michael’s Hospice, Hastings RNLI and other charities.

To take part, send in the application form on this page or log onto www.stleonardsrotary.org or phone Doug Deeks on 01424 423422.
