Filsham Valley headteacher quits

The head of Filsham Valley has resigned.

Peter Midwinter handed in his notice just days after the controversial decision to close the school and replace it with a new academy.

The plan was widely opposed at Fillsham Valley but Mr Midwinter has not yet made a statement on his departure.

However a spokesman for the Nastional Union of Teachers (NUT) who works at the school, issued this statement.

He said: "We are angry that East Sussex County council have blighted the school by their appalling handling of the academy proposals, failing to properly involve governors, management, staff, parents and pupils in those plans.

"Not one county councillor or sponsor involved has ever been into speaking to staff before or during the two public consultations.

"With this kind of treatment it is no surprise to us that Peter has come to what must have been a very difficult decision.

"Losing a head teacher is destabilising, and we fear acceleration in the loss of teachers and staff from the school which will significantly undermine the progress that has made in the three years of Peter's leadership."

It is not yet clear whether he has a new job lined up, but he will leave at the end of the academic year in the summer.

Are you surprised by this decision? Was he a good headteacher? Leave your comments below.
