Film crews in town shooting scenes for new black comedy

A touch of Hollywood glamour came to Hastings this week as camera crews for a new film descended on 1066 Country.

Filming for the new flick, The Last Breath, got underway in Seddlescombe on Monday and the UK Film Council funded film has quite a local connection.

It features Hastings based actor, Francis Magee who many readers will recognise from a host of high profile roles in shows like Murphy's Law, A Touch of Frost, Bad Girls, The Bill and Waking the Dead.

Last Breath is his fourth film after appearances in The Calling, 2005 desert romp Sahara and cult Brit gangster flick Layer Cake.

As well as Mr Magee, the film's director, David Jackson, lives in Hastings - as does the production designed Janice Flint.

The majority of the filming is taking place at the Hastings Fly Fishing Club and the shooting of scenes was expected to last all week.

The film is a black comedy eco-thriller which tells the story of a family scuba diving trip which goes wrong. Having enjoyed a length dip, the Kelvin family surface to find that the world's oxygen supply has suddenly dissipated.

With their tanks running low they embark on a race against time to reach the nearby dive hut.

Initially they work together but as desperation sets in their primeval instincts set in and the family turn on each other in a bloody struggle to obtain the remaining oxygen.

Almost all of the film's main scenes have been shot in the Hastings area and the production crew received a lot of support from local people and business.

Obviously, Hastings Fly Fishing Club supplied the location but Hastings Sub Aqua Diving Club also played its part by lending equipment to the actors as well as expertise and supervision.

Local Italian eatery Fab's Trattoria, which is in Western Road in St Leonards, provided lunches for the crew and a Hastings diving shop, Epic Life, handed over a collection of wetsuits for the cast.

Last but not least Courthouse Street Mews lent the team a series of props.

Jane Plouviez, who was involved in the filming, said: "It has been a real local effort and we are very grateful to everyone who has helped out and lent a hand. It was very much appreciated."
